Fifteen Year 10 students from Tudor Grange Academy, Kingshurst have gained first-hand experience of the construction industry through a pilot work experience programme delivered in partnership with Taylor Woodrow and facilitated by Solihull Careers Hub.

The programme took students on a learning journey that combined workplace encounters, industry challenges, site visits and recruitment simulations, giving them an insight into the wide range of careers available within the sector.

Designed as a scalable employer engagement model for students from Year 7 onwards, the pilot saw all 15 participants complete the programme, with one student now progressing towards a career in construction through ongoing employer mentoring.

The initiative helped challenge common misconceptions about the industry.

Before taking part, many students viewed construction as a predominantly manual and male-dominated profession.

By the end of the programme, many had developed a broader understanding of the diverse roles available and expressed a greater interest in the sector.

Student Charlie said: "I found the Social Value Manager role most interesting.

"You get to speak to people and help."

Another student, Amina added: "My art skills can be useful in the design roles."

Alongside learning about career opportunities, students also developed key employability skills including communication, teamwork and problem-solving.

Staff from Taylor Woodrow noted a significant increase in confidence among participants as the programme progressed.

Taylor Woodrow social value apprentice Maisie Haddock said: "They were really nervous going into it and then came away saying, 'it was not as scary as I thought it would be.'

"I think this partnership worked really well.

"Overall, it's been absolutely brilliant!"

The programme created a structured pathway for students to build relationships with employers, gain practical experience and explore future career options, while bringing together careers education and workplace learning.

Cllr Heather Delaney, Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council's deputy leader and portfolio holder for economy, business and skills, said: "We are proud to have brought together Taylor Woodrow and Tudor Grange Academy, Kingshurst, for this pilot programme.

"Students developed valuable workplace skills, built confidence and gained insight into careers within the construction sector.
