Spotlight Series: Meet the Solihull woman rediscovering her confidence and supporting Women's Aid
By Emily Griffin 7th Nov 2026
With the launch of Ladies First Charity Calendar 2027, Nub News is meeting the local women behind the project to discover the personal stories, passions and causes that inspired them to take part.
From stepping outside their comfort zones to raising money for charities close to their hearts, each woman has her own reason for getting involved. In this series, we find out their 'why' and what the experience has meant to them.
Maxine Round – Balsall Common
For Maxine Round, taking part in the Ladies First Charity Calendar was an opportunity to step outside her comfort zone, rediscover her confidence and be part of a project celebrating local women.
As a self-employed beauty therapist, Maxine said she enjoyed the opportunity to get involved in something different, particularly the chance to take part in a photoshoot that allowed her to embrace a more carefree side of herself.
She was particularly drawn to the opportunity to support a charity close to her heart, with the experience offering a chance to give something back while celebrating a new chapter in her life.
Maxine's why
Maxine said her decision to take part in the calendar was partly about rediscovering the person she was before a difficult period in her life.
Having finalised her divorce in February, after experiencing domestic abuse, she described herself as still rebuilding her confidence and beginning to recognise her old self again.
She said the calendar's summer party theme for July felt particularly fitting, bringing back memories of a time when she enjoyed going to parties, listening to music, dancing and having fun.
"It just felt like I was just able to have a bit of fun really, which is me before all the abuse," she said.
The photoshoot gave her an opportunity to embrace that side of her personality again, with the music, coloured smoke and party atmosphere making the experience particularly enjoyable.

"It's almost like a bit of a celebration to be able to do it."
Maxine said she had experienced some difficult years and that being involved in the calendar had given her a welcome opportunity to do something for herself.
She added that the experience had reminded her of the person she was before her marriage and marked a positive step as she continues to move forward.
Maxine's chosen charity: Women's Aid
Maxine chose Women's Aid as her calendar charity because of the personal support she received during her experiences of domestic abuse.
Although she had heard of the organisation before, she became more familiar with its work after her doctor provided her with information about its services while she was struggling.
"It's an absolute godsend to me," she said.
"I'll never forget having someone there just to listen to me when I felt I had nowhere else to turn."
She said having someone neutral to talk to made a significant difference, particularly at times when she questioned herself and felt isolated.
Maxine hopes the calendar will help raise money and awareness so other women experiencing abuse can access the same support.
She said: "Being able to give something back to the charity is my way of saying a little thank you.
"I just want to help keep charities like that going, so they're there for somebody else when they need them. Without donations, they wouldn't be able to continue their work."
The Ladies First Charity Calendar launched on 15 October and is now available to purchase here.
