Solihull's two Conservative MPs have written to the new Prime Minister, Andy Burnham, calling on him to break away from the policies of the previous Labour Government and deliver what they describe as a "change of direction" for local communities.

In a joint letter, Solihull West and Shirley MP Dr Neil Shastri-Hurst and Meriden and Solihull East MP Saqib Bhatti outlined a series of priorities they say have been raised repeatedly by residents across the borough.

The MPs said they want the Government to better protect the Green Belt from housing development, increase neighbourhood policing, restore a full Emergency Department at Solihull Hospital, support high streets and youth employment, and make home ownership more affordable.

Dr Shastri-Hurst said residents wanted more than simply a change of Prime Minister.

He said: "The previous Labour Government left Solihull facing excessive housing targets, rising pressure on our public services, and fewer opportunities for young people.

"A change of Prime Minister must mean more than a change of face.

"Our constituents want to see a change of direction, and we've set out a clear plan for how the Government can start rebuilding confidence."

Mr Bhatti said he had written to Mr Burnham seeking assurances that the Government would support issues he believes are important to local residents.

He said: "We want to see an end to Labour's war on the Green Belt, more police on our streets, an A&E at Solihull Hospital, young people in work not on benefits and a Thatcherite revolution in home ownership."

Mr Bhatti also wished the Prime Minister "the very best" in his new role and said he hoped the new Government would deliver meaningful progress on the issues raised by residents across the borough.

Both MPs said they would continue to hold ministers to account and campaign on behalf of local communities in Solihull.
