Library users across Solihull will soon be able to enjoy longer opening hours at three local libraries thanks to the introduction of new self-service technology.

Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council (SMBC) has announced that Dickens Heath, Hobs Moat and Balsall Common libraries will be fitted with Open Plus technology between winter 2026 and spring 2027, allowing registered members to access the buildings outside normal staffed hours.

The technology uses secure self-service systems, enabling library members to enter using a library card and PIN while security systems and CCTV monitor the premises.

The scheme forms part of the council's wider efforts to make libraries more flexible and accessible community spaces, giving residents greater freedom over when they use their local facilities.

Before the technology is introduced, residents are being invited to share their views on how Open Plus should operate at the three libraries and the feedback will help shape the service before it goes live.

Councillor Wazma Qais, SMBC's cabinet member for communities, said: "Our libraries are at the heart of our communities, and we want to make them even more welcoming, flexible, and accessible spaces for everyone to enjoy.

"Open Plus will extend opening hours and give people choice of how and when they use their local library, fitting visits in around work, school, families and other commitments."

During Open Plus hours, users will be able to borrow and return books, access computers, printing and Wi-Fi services, and use the libraries for reading, studying and working.

Community groups and organisations will also be able to run workshops, activities and events during the extended access periods.

Staff will continue to be available during normal opening hours to offer support and advice to visitors who prefer to use the library when it is staffed.

SMBC has not yet confirmed launch dates for the three libraries but says further details, including how residents can register for the scheme, will be announced ahead of each site going live.
