Drivers in Solihull are being warned of a series of overnight motorway link road closures next month as HS2 construction work continues across the area.

The westbound link road connecting the M42 southbound at Junction 8 to the M6 northbound at Junction 4a will be closed overnight on Friday 4 September and Monday 7 September 2026.

The closures will be in place from 9pm until 6am on both nights.

According to HS2, the works are needed to support the construction of the Water Orton Viaduct. A lane closure will first be introduced on the M42 southbound between Junctions 9 and 8 before the link road is fully closed.

Motorists will be diverted via a clearly signed route while the work takes place. HS2 said only low levels of noise are expected during the overnight operations.

Drivers should also be aware of a separate closure affecting the M42 Junction 7a northbound link road to the M6 southbound near Chelmsley Wood.

That link road will be closed from 9pm on Thursday 3 September until 6am on Friday 4 September to allow contractors to carry out essential concrete works and continue construction of structures in the area.

A signed diversion route will be in place during the closure, with low levels of noise expected from the works.

Both schemes form part of HS2's ongoing construction programme in the West Midlands.

The high-speed rail project is currently undergoing what HS2 has described as a "comprehensive reset" aimed at ensuring it can be delivered efficiently and at the lowest reasonable cost.

HS2 said the work is being carried out in stages and is due to be completed during 2026, with further updates to be provided to local communities as construction progresses.
