Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council (SMBC) has issued safety advice after fire services were called to several grassland fires across the borough over the weekend.

The council shared images on Facebook yesterday (August 3) showing the damage caused by the fires and warned that the ongoing hot, dry weather is leaving parks and open spaces particularly vulnerable.

In the post, SMBC said: "Just one spark can be enough for a fire to quickly spread, putting people, wildlife and our green spaces at risk."

Residents visiting local parks and green spaces are being reminded that barbecues and fires are not permitted in any of Solihull's parks and open spaces.

The council is also urging people to fully extinguish cigarettes and dispose of them safely, take litter home or use the bins provided, and call 999 immediately if they see smoke or fire.

SMBC added: "Please stay safe and help to protect our parks and open spaces."

The warning comes as dry conditions continue across the region, increasing the risk of fires starting and spreading quickly through grassland areas.
