Second disgraced Solihull councillor quits

A second of three disgraced councillors has resigned from Solihull Council after being caught in an undercover sting.
Jamie Campbell was recorded in the ITV documentary Undercover: A Year in Reform making a racist remark.
In one clip that has been released, during a conversion on speculation a mosque may be built, Mr Campbell said: "There's got to be a way of stopping that, like go and buy some pork chops.
"We'll bury it in the ground."
On Thursday, (October 15), Mr Campbell had not quit the Reform UK group and was still its deputy leader.
In a statement posted on social media he wrote: "At the time, I was campaigning alongside other individuals.
"Comments made by others were their own and do not reflect my beliefs or values.
"There has also been discussion regarding audio attributed to me. A comment was made that was intended as humour and may, with hindsight, have been in poor taste.
"If anything I said caused offence, I sincerely apologise. Causing offence was never my intention.
"However, I categorically reject any suggestion that I am racist or sexist.
"This has been a deeply unpleasant experience, and I owe it to those closest to me to carefully reflect on what comes next.
"I have not yet made any decisions regarding my future. I will take time to speak with my family, consider the support I have received, and decide what is best for all concerned.
"Whatever I ultimately decide, I remain proud of the work I have done for residents and grateful to the many people who have placed their trust in me."
The party had stuck by him with a Reform UK spokesperson saying in a statement earlier this week: "Coun Campbell's comment was a joke in poor taste but with no malicious intent.
"It's something that he deeply regrets, and the party will not be taking any further action."
But by Friday morning, (October 16), the authority's website had been updated to show Mr Campbell – who had been vice chairman of the resources and delivering value scrutiny board and had sat on the governance committee – had quit with there now being a vacancy.
Mr Campbell was originally elected at May's local elections, finishing second in the ward with 2,181 votes. Due to no clear route being available to remove a councillor, if he had not quit Mr Campbell would have been due to stand for re-election in 2028.
He is the second Castle Bromwich councillor to resign within 24 hours. Chris Whelan, who was recorded making racist and misogynistic remarks, resigned as a councillor after quitting the Reform UK group earlier this week.
Cllr Alan Feeney, who also quit the party prior to the documentary clips being released, remains a councillor despite growing calls for him to resign. Cllr Feeney was filming making racist remarks in the undercover investigation which is due to be screened in full on ITV on Sunday.
Mr Campbell, Mr Whelan and Cllr Feeney have not responded to requests from the Local Democracy Reporting Service for comment.
