Drivers face huge delays near Water Orton as HS2 shuts motorways
By Emily Griffin 16th Oct 2026
Motorists are being reminded of a series of motorway closures across the West Midlands this weekend as HS2 construction work continues.
The closures will begin at 9pm on Friday (October 23) and remain in place until 5am on Monday (October 26).
They will affect the M42 between junctions 6 and 9 northbound and junctions 9 and 7 southbound.
The southbound link from M6 junction 4a to the M42 will also be closed in both directions.
Further closures will affect the M6 northbound link from junction 3a to M6 Toll junction T1, as well as the M6 Toll southbound from junction T3.
The closures are needed to facilitate key HS2 construction activities, including the installation of bridge deck sections for the Water Orton viaducts in North Warwickshire.
Work will also include the final West Deck slide of the M6 South Viaduct in Solihull.
A fully signed diversion route will be in place throughout the weekend closures.
HS2 has also warned that nearby residents may hear low-level noise from the works site during the construction activities.
