Residents living in an area where complaints have been made over noise from Birmingham Airport fear there could be more night time flights in future.

Marston Green village is next to BHX and, as the Local Democracy Reporting Service reported last year, airport bosses successfully applied to Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council (SMBC) for an increase after arguing extra night flights were necessary for the airport to grow.

Solihull planners agreed to an increase from five per cent to 7.3 per cent, with an indicative cap of 7.6 per cent, in flights arriving or leaving between 11.30pm and 6am.

The restrictions are understood to average around 21 flights a night.

The airport has been keeping comfortably within the allowed numbers but 23 complaints were made to the airport about noise earlier this year, with Marston Green one of the areas where residents most complained about the roars of jets over their homes.

A resident who had lived in Holly Grove for 10 years said: "Some nights you hear it a lot.

"It has increased over the years. Ideally we wouldn't want any night time flights – it should be all in the day."

A resident who has lived in the street for three decades said: "There has been more and more over the years.

"Its not going to get less.

"There is talk of extra runways, flights to America – it is all going to increase."

As we are chatting a plane loudly flies low overheard with the resident quipping: "That's one of the quieter ones."

But another resident in the street said: "When you live in Marston Green you come to accept it.

"You do get used to it.

"You have to live by something, traffic on the roads.

"I was here when Concorde came in that nearly broke the windows.

"I just sleep through it."

In nearby Moseley Drive the reporter heard how when planes take off the sound echoes off the houses there.

One resident said: "Don't get me started on the night time flights, we've been here 60 years.

"When these houses were built they said no night flights.

"One of the big planes takes off at 6am every morning.

"You do hear them throughout the night, into the early hours of the morning.

"I imagine more airlines will use it, the night time flights will increase."

A neighbour said: "You get used to it, to be honest the trains are louder.

"You get the odd flight through the night but about 10.30pm, 11 it is quite quiet."

And another resident said: "I'm not too bothered if there ends up being more and more, I'm just used to it now."

The complaints for the area were mentioned in minutes for a SMBC sub committee, set up to monitor the airport's performance.

"The majority of these (complaints) were received in January which appear to have been driven by poor weather conditions causing planes to divert from a standard flight path around the airport," the minutes say.

The numbers of complaints were also described as "relatively low".

The next meeting of the group is scheduled for mid-October when the performance of the airport during the crucial spring and summer period is set to be assessed.
