Time capsule marks 100 years of Solihull’s cherished Malvern Park

A special time capsule has been created to mark 100 years of Solihull's Malvern Park, bringing together memories and contributions from groups connected to the much-loved green space.
The milestone was celebrated at a centenary event, where representatives from local groups and organisations gathered to recognise the park's history and its importance to Solihull over the past century.
The time capsule contains contributions from groups including Solihull Women's Stride walking group, Parkrun, Talking Rubbish, Veolia, Solihull Council's Parks Team, and visitors to the park.
Some of those involved attended the event, sharing their memories and experiences of Malvern Park as part of the celebrations.
One special guest in attendance was Gayle Horton, whose great-grandfather William Horton opened the park 100 years ago.
Gayle told Nub News: "It's lovely to celebrate this, it's a brilliant event, very special, and I'm honoured to be here.
"Great grandad would be so proud."
A speech was given by the Mayor of Solihull, Cllr Sardul Singh Marwa, who reflected on what the space has meant over the years.
He spoke about people enjoying the fields and open spaces of the park before saying: "Today we want to celebrate this milestone.
"To do this, we are going to plant a time capsule which will contain a snapshot of our community today, our lives, and our achievements.
"Perhaps, when the time capsule is opened many years after we have gone, those future residents will look back with curiosity at what we considered was important."
A poem written by a pupil at Solihull School was then read out by council leader Karen Grinsell, reflecting on the history of Malvern Park from its opening a century ago to the role it continues to play today.
A magnolia tree was also planted, to mark the event, and contribute to the biodiversity and environment of the park.
The time capsule will preserve a snapshot of life in Solihull in 2026, capturing contributions from those connected to the park and marking a century of memories.
The centenary event celebrated Malvern Park's past while looking ahead to its future, ensuring its place as a valued green space for generations to come.
