Three major HS2 viaducts in Solihull have been structurally completed, marking further progress on the high-speed railway's approach to Interchange Station.

The Balsall Common, Marsh Farm and River Blythe viaducts have all been built within the Solihull metropolitan borough.

The River Blythe Viaduct is the largest of the three and is around 1.5 miles from the planned Interchange Station.

Engineers working for HS2's construction partner Balfour Beatty VINCI are now preparing to install its final parapets, with waterproofing and acoustic barrier works also to be completed.

Doug Barnett, senior project manager at HS2 Ltd, said: "Our engineering teams are making fantastic progress on the Interchange Station approach, and it's a significant achievement that all three viaducts in the Solihull borough are now structurally complete.

"The design and landscaping solutions were of upmost importance to local residents, and we worked extremely hard to get that right."

The 495-metre River Blythe Viaduct crosses the river, its floodplain, and Meriden Road near Hampton in Arden.

The area is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest, with the structure designed to minimise its impact on the surrounding landscape and wildlife.

The Marsh Farm Viaduct, around two and a half miles south, was completed in summer 2025.

Measuring 145 metres long and standing five metres above ground, it crosses Bayleys Brook and surrounding marshland and is currently being used as a haul road for construction work.

The 430-metre Balsall Common Viaduct crosses Station Road, Truggist Lane, Bayleys Brook, the Heart of England Way and the floodplain.

Its main structure was completed earlier this year, with 304 parapets due to be installed by spring 2027.

A public vote selected a polished finish for the parapets, alongside a weave motif reflecting the area's textile history.

Matthew Parkes, construction manager at Balfour Beatty VINCI, said the completion was a "huge another achievement" and highlighted efforts to protect the area's wetlands, floodplains and waterways.

"Every effort has been made to protect these precious spaces and habitats," he said.

"The realignment of Bayleys Brook is just one example of how the team has delivered on this commitment, where engineers carefully diverted a 150-metre section of the brook to allow Balsall Common Viaduct to pass over the top."

HS2 will include more than 500 bridging structures, including more than 50 major viaducts.

When complete, Britain's new high-speed railway will create quicker and more reliable journeys, freeing up space for more local trains on the most congested part of the West Coast Main Line.
