Plans to give a Solihull town centre Irish bar a makeover have been approved by council planners.

O'Neill's, on Poplar Road, has been granted permission for a series of external alterations, including refurbished fascias and projection signs, as well as a new amenity sign and Guinness-themed mural.

The approved plans will see the venue's existing signage updated and the outside of the building enhanced with a new green and white colour scheme.

Documents submitted as part of the application showed proposals to repaint the external timber features and install new signs displaying the O'Neill's name and "Arrowsmith's Digital Darts".

At the rear of the building, planners also approved a new mural featuring the slogan: "Guinness for darts, bullseye!"

The application attracted comments from Solihull Council's heritage officers, who noted the pub occupies a prominent position on a gateway route into the town centre.

In their response, they said: "The public house is a building of architectural interest which occupies a prominent position on a gateway to the town centre.

"The building itself makes a positive contribution to the character and appearance of the conservation area."

The heritage team added that the western elevation of the building was currently "cluttered and requires improvement" and welcomed the proposed upgrades.

They concluded: "The general upgrading of this area is welcomed and the muted green and white palette is acceptable."

An amended application was subsequently submitted, reducing the proposed LED trough lighting so that it would illuminate only the new lettering.

The plans were approved by Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council on 3 August.
