Residents living a road under a school streets scheme claim it has failed, echoing comments made by a ward councillor.

But householders in another street are looking forward to getting a scheme as they say action needs to be taken.

The School Streets scheme sees roads closed to all traffic outside primary schools during pick-up and drop-off times.

Signs are put in place to indicate the start of the restricted zone and only residents of the street with permits and blue badge holders are allowed access.

Solihull Metropilotan Borough Council (SMBC) uses a traffic regulation order for its scheme which prohibits vehicles from entering a specified area at 11 schools.

But debating the success of the scheme at a recent meeting of the cabinet portfolio holder for environment and infrastructure's decision session, Cllr Kathryn Thomas highlighted Valley Primary School in Fallowfield Road.

"When (enforcement) officers aren't on site to watch, the offending continues," the councillor said.

"A number of incidents have occurred including a resident's wall being damaged and a near miss with a child."

The Local Democracy Reporting Service visited the road on July 21 and the overwhelming majority of residents we spoke with said they were not happy.

"It doesn't work, it's been a waste of time and money," one resident said.

"The signs are pointless. It's 20mph, but they race here past the school."

Another said: "When parents park, buses can't get through.

"It's not stopped parents from driving. They are double parked, it is so dangerous with children crossing.

"Its not been successful at all."

A neighbour said: "It's been a waste of time, it's never been enforced.

"They park all along here, nothing has changed.

"They don't park in front of my drive because I tell them.

"Kids run around, parents are on their phones driving not following the speed limit – one day a child will get run over."

Another resident said: "I've had my drive blocked several times, it's not worked really."

Mark, their neighbour, said: "I had an argument with a parent blocking our house.

"We see enforcement every three or four weeks – it should be every day really."

And another resident said he had even had parents park cars on his drive.

At that meeting council officer Dean Ward, the authority's head of highways, said: "We do appreciate the issues with poor compliance at certain locations", adding they would seek additional funding for enforcement cameras.

And the cabinet holder Cllr Ken Hawkins said he seen the success of the scheme but added "with differing levels of performance".

At that meeting Cllr Hawkins agreed to roll out a school street scheme to Coppice Primary School covering Coppice Road.

Residents there told the LDRS they would welcome anything as they had drives blocked, and hoped it would encourage parents to walk and cycle when taking their children to and from school.

One resident said: "They block me in and I can't get out some mornings."

Another said: "People around here complain about the parking.

"There is also a problem with people doing U-turns in people's drives – that is annoying."

A neighbour highlighted that a junction line outside her house had faded, calling for that to be repainted.

"I can't get out of the road during school times, there are so many cars here," she said.

"It is horrendous – all of us in the road will try not to go out or come in during school times.

"I'm all for it being introduced."

But another resident who had lived in the road 20 years said he had fears it would just shift parking problems onto the nearby busy Damson Lane.

"I have concerns about it," he said.

"If you stop parking all together here (in Coppice Road), it would be dangerous on that road."
