Nearly 100 handmade teddy bears have joined local police officers on patrol to help comfort children caught up in traumatic incidents.

The cuddly recruits were donated by the Kingshurst Library Needle Crafters, a group of volunteers who spend their free time creating "Trauma Teddies" for emergency services, hospitals and crisis centres.

Officers first learned about the initiative during a recent beat surgery in Kingshurst, where they met with residents to discuss local concerns and community issues.

During the event, the crafters explained how their handmade bears are used to provide reassurance and comfort to children facing difficult circumstances.

The group later donated a collection of specially knitted teddy bears dressed as police officers, complete with miniature high-visibility jackets.

The bears have now been placed in patrol vehicles across the area and will be given to children officers encounter during incidents where they may be frightened, distressed or in need of comfort.

Police now have almost 100 teddy bears available thanks to the generosity of the Kingshurst Library Needle Crafters and another local volunteer knitter.

The initiative aims to provide a small source of comfort during what can often be a child's most difficult moments.
