Residents are not sure if they will vote in Solihull election

Local News by Sam Greenway - Local Democracy Reporter 30th Apr 2026

Many Solihull residents have said they are disillusioned and not sure if they will bother voting in next week's local elections.

With just a week to go until polling day for an election in the borough in which all seats will be contested, the Local Democracy Reporting Service has chatted with residents to test the temperature – and found it to be very lukewarm.

The LDRS visited a picturesque housing estate south of the town centre that many residents said was a nice place to live.

A Chalgrove Crescent resident summed up the mood by saying he was "not very interested" in the elections at all.

"Nothing much changes if you vote," he said.

"I don't see the point, that's my view on it."

Another resident said she was not interested in local politics.

"I'll probably vote, I haven't looked (at the candidates)," she said.

"I'll decide on the day who to vote for."

The resident raised that they wanted someone elected who would fix local issues.

"Like Alderminster Road – it's like a dirt track," she said.

"It's been reported many times over the last six months, they said it would be resurfaced.

"But nothing gets done."

Lucian Raboveanu said: "I'll probably vote.

"I care about the state of the roads and the parking problems around here.

"We moved here two years ago, nothing has been done about parking.

"For these elections I would be interested in candidates who are optimistic for the community – I don't care which party they come from.

"It's important we have confidence that when we raise issues, someone will look into it."

The Alderton Close resident said he wanted something to be done about safety in the Solihull town centre.

"Feeling unsafe in the centre, it's quite concerning," he said.

"They are young (those doing it) but the way some behave, it's pretty hostile."

A Willoughby Drive resident added one of the issues she wanted to see councillors sort out were boy racers.

"It's constant at night," she said.

"We had a policeman here the other night. They are coming from all over, it's horrendous.

"It's been going on a while.

"It's poor that no candidates have knocked on my door before the election."

Voting takes place on May 7 with polling stations open between 7am and 10pm.

The Solihull results will be announced on Friday, May 8.
