Motorists warned of disruption as motorway closes overnight
By Emily Griffin 30th Oct 2026
The M42 northbound will be closed overnight between junctions 6 and 9 next week as part of HS2 construction works.
The closure will begin at 9pm on Monday, November 2, and remain in place until 6am on Tuesday, November 3.
Contractor BBV JV will be carrying out concrete casting work on the Water Orton Viaduct structures, where they cross the motorway.
The closure will affect the M42 northbound between junctions 6 and 9, as well as the M6 junction 4a southbound link to the M42 in both directions and the M6 junction 3a northbound link to the M42.
A clearly signed diversion route will be in place during the closure.
HS2 has warned motorists to expect low levels of noise from machinery while the work is carried out.
The work forms part of the wider HS2 construction programme, which is undergoing a comprehensive reset to ensure the railway can be built efficiently and at the lowest reasonable cost.
The reset is being carried out in stages and is due to be completed in 2026.
