A new shop dedicated to showcasing local independent businesses is set to open in Solihull town centre this week.

Mill Lane Collective will officially open its doors at 5 Mill Lane on Friday 25 September, giving ten local makers the opportunity to sell their products from a high street location.

The new venture follows the success of two pop-up makers' markets held in Mell Square earlier this year.

Funded by the Mayor of the West Midlands Market Fund, the events attracted hundreds of visitors and highlighted demand for locally made products.

Now, Mell Square has teamed up with the Community Environmental Trust to create a permanent retail space where independent businesses can grow their customer base and gain experience of running a town centre shop.

The collective will feature a range of handmade products, including artwork, stationery, natural skincare, personalised gifts, 3D-printed models, activewear, sustainable accessories, floral arrangements and candles.

Cllr Heather Delaney, Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council's (SMBC) deputy leader and cabinet member for economy, business and skills, welcomed the initiative.

"We are delighted to have created this opportunity for ten talented local makers to take the next step in growing their businesses," she said.

"Many independents start online or through markets and events, and gaining a high street presence can often be out of reach.

"Mill Lane Collective will give these entrepreneurs the chance to showcase their products, reach new customers and gain valuable retail experience in the heart of Solihull.

"We wish them every success."

West Midlands Mayor Richard Parker said the project demonstrated how support for small businesses could help entrepreneurs expand.

"I set up the Market Fund to give entrepreneurs like the Mill Lane Makers' Collective their first real opportunity to get their products to market," he said.

"To see the Collective move into a prime 'bricks and mortar' shop in the heart of Solihull town centre shows how a helping hand at the right time can lead to much bigger things.

"These sole traders are as important to our economy as the big employers, and I'll keep backing them to succeed."

The official grand opening of Mill Lane Collective will take place at 9.30am on Friday 25 September.

The store is located at 5 Mill Lane in Solihull town centre.
