M42 bridge demolished as engineers develop temporary replacement plans
By Emily Griffin 26th Oct 2026
A deteriorating bridge at M42 junction 6 has been demolished, with engineers now working on plans for a temporary replacement.
National Highways confirmed the bridge, which formed part of Bickenhill Interchange, was removed in September during a planned closure of the M42 to allow HS2 works to take place.
Engineers and design partners are carrying out detailed assessments to develop a temporary bridge solution, with an installation timeframe yet to be confirmed.
The M42 remains open in both directions beneath the bridge, but diversions are in place for affected traffic and congestion is possible at peak times.
Drivers are advised to follow signed diversion routes rather than rely on sat-navs, which may not reflect the closures.
Motorists travelling to Birmingham Airport, Birmingham International railway station or the NEC are urged to allow extra time.
Access to all three destinations remains open as normal.
National Highways identified significant structural deterioration during routine inspections in November 2025.
The bridge was not part of the recently completed M42 junction 6 improvements scheme, and the deterioration was unrelated to that project.
National Highways is developing options for both temporary and permanent replacement structures.
Existing diversions will remain in place until further arrangements are confirmed.
