A Solihull Scout group is racing to raise thousands of pounds to replace the failing roof of a community building used by more than 160 young people and several local organisations.

1st Solihull Scout Group is appealing for donations towards a new roof for its Gordon Wilcox Building after the existing structure, which is more than 30 years old, began to deteriorate.

Chris Dunster, who is leading the project in her role as Land Trustee, said: "The current roof on this building is now life expired and we are desperately trying to raise the money we need to replace it.

"The existing roof surface is over 30 years old and has done very well to last this long.

"The surface is breaking down at the edges and we are worried that with a strong storm the whole thing could peel back."

The Scout group owns 18 acres of woodland, an old mill pool and two buildings, all maintained by volunteers.

Ms Dunster said: "The Scout Group is truly thriving and we have eight scout sections with over 160 young people aged from four to 17.

"Whilst fabulous, this does all come with a challenge as 1st Solihull has the responsibility and stewardship of this ancient site including all the associated maintenance and running costs."

The replacement roof is expected to cost around £45,000.

Half of the funding has already been pledged by the Gordon Wilcox Trust, with the group now working to raise the remaining amount through donations and fundraising.

The new insulated metal roof will be installed over the existing waterproof layer and comes with a 40-year warranty.

Ms Dunster added: "The increased insulation will also help us to reduce our energy usage which will enable us to improve our carbon footprint."

The site is also used by a number of community groups, including keep-fit classes, Solihull Quilters, Solihull Amateur Radio Club, a line dancing group and a special needs group for children and young people.

Anyone donating £20 or more through the group's GoFundMe appeal can have their name included on a legacy plaque at the building.
