Councillors turned down pleas to delay a decision on a new housing estate in a Solihull village giving it the green light.

And the decision to approve 110 homes on land in Rumbush Lane, Tidbury Green, will also come as a boost to a sports club in the borough.

Developer Rainier Developments Limited originally submitted an application for outline planning permission for the homes, the creation of associated vehicular and pedestrian accesses, open space, parking and landscaping in August last year.

The application went before the latest meeting of Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council's (SMBC) planning committee on July 15.

As the Local Democracy Reporting Service previously reported a housing blueprint for Solihull was previously withdrawn with a new one now in development.

In the public speaking section ward cllr Keith Green called the application "speculative" saying: "I'm speaking to formerly object.

"The application seeks to release green belt land before Solihull's new local plan has even been published.

"The local plan exists for this reason, the appropriate mechanism for determining where future housing growth should take place across the borough.

"I want to be clear residents are not opposed to appropriate development, they recognise the need for new homes but they want them to be delivered in the right locations.

"I urge the committee to refuse and ensure the future of this site is considered through the proper local plan process."

Gary Stephens, from planning agents Marrons on behalf of the applicant, said: "Granting permission will not prejudice or pre-determine any decision you as a council must make drawing up your new local plan.

"The proposed development would result in an investment of over £4 million into community infrastructure, schools, GPs and transport improvements."

Leafield Athletic FC were proposed to benefit with cash towards a new football pitch, grasscrete car park and access infrastructure.

Simon Birley, a match secretary and youth coach at the football club, told the committee the investment would make a "massive difference" to them.

"It will help ensure our long term future," he added.

In the debate of the committee chairman of the committee Councillor Bob Grinsell said deferring their decision to an indeterminate time risked non-determination of the application and having to pay costs.

"We have an application before us, we have to make a decision," the chairman said.

Officer Mark Andrews, SMBC's head of planning, design and engagement services, said: "In an ideal world you may have a local plan that steers some of this development, but that is not where we are at the moment.

"The local plan is still in development."

Cllr Grinsell added: "Quite frankly this borough is under the cosh from central government (to build homes) and none of our making.

"We have no choices in certain things, we are where we are."

In the vote councillors unanimously approved the application, subject to conditions and the signing of a section 106 agreement.
