M42 weekend closure postponed due to strong winds
By Emily Griffin 22nd Oct 2026
A planned full weekend closure of the M42 near Birmingham has been postponed due to forecast strong winds.
The closure was due to begin at 9pm on Friday (October 23) and continue until 5am on Monday (October 26).
The works were planned to facilitate key HS2 construction work, including bridge deck installation on the Water Orton viaducts in North Warwickshire and work on the M6 South Viaduct in Solihull.
However, HS2 has confirmed the closure will no longer go ahead as planned because strong winds are expected to make it unsafe for cranes and heavy machinery to operate.
In an update, National Highways said: "This weekend's full closure of the M42 near Birmingham has been postponed. As strong winds are expected, it is unsafe for cranes and heavy machinery to operate.
"We'll provide further updates as soon as they are confirmed."
No new date for the closure has been announced.
