HS2 is planning to plant a wide range of trees, bushes and hedgerows around a new bridge in Balsall Common to help screen it from view.

The high speed rail developer finished moving Waste Lane and installing the new bridge last year.

It has now submitted plans for a "scheme of mitigation" to Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council for approval.

HS2 says it wants to provide "visual screening and landscape integration" with "native planting" of new trees and hedges.

It says the planting will "increase in height, density and structural complexity over time".

In particular HS2 said Little Beanit Farm Holiday Cottages have been "significantly affected" by the new bridge.

"The existing vegetation will be supplemented by proposed planting of low woodland edge planting including species of Dogwood, Midland Hawthorn, Wild Privet and Crab Apple," the plans said.

"This woodland will provide additional screening of the elevated road and overbridge, creating a graduated transition between the existing trees and the adjoining grassland, softening the interface and reflecting the structure of the surrounding landscape.

"Over time, this will create a naturalistic edge that integrates the scheme into the wider landscape context."

HS2 said it will take three to five years to reach "screening height" and after five to ten years there will be "more enhanced screening".

The application continued: "Planting will link existing wooded areas and reinforce the vegetated character of the local landscape.

"Hedgerows have been planted with native species to support early pollinators."

In total 307 metres of hedgerows are planned along the line at Waste Lane. This as well as 849 square metres of 'woodland planting' and eight "individual feature trees".
