An extraordinary meeting of Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council (SMBC) has been called to deal with the fall out of the authority's disgraced former Castle Bromwich councillors who made national headlines this week.

Councillors across the political divide have joined forces backing a motion saying former councillors Chris Whelan, Jamie Campbell and Alan Feeney were "not fit to represent Solihull Council", and to replace the roles they used to hold.

But Reform UK councillors on the authority are not backing the motion.

In clips released from the upcoming ITV documentary Undercover: A Year in Reform, Chris Whelan was shown making racist remarks and misogynistic comments about a fellow Reform candidate while Jamie Campbell was recorded making a racist comment. Both quit as councillors.

Alan Feeney was also shown saying racist comments including that his Castle Bromwich ward had been "infested" with Asians, labelling them "absolute parasites," while on the election trail earlier this year.

He was the most high profile of the names caught in the sting having held the role of deputy mayor and also sitting at a councillor on Birmingham City Council.

Cllr Feeney resigned from the Reform UK group earlier this week before resigning as a councillor this afternoon, (October 16).

In his statement he wrote: "My remarks were wrong, offensive and completely unacceptable.

"There is no excuse for my comments. With responsibility comes accountability, and it is for that reason that I have resigned every post I hold.

"I apologise sincerely and wholeheartedly to my residents, colleagues and everyone affected by my remarks."

Prior to the statement he had already quit as deputy mayor, having been in line to become the borough's mayor in 2027.

With the next full council meeting not scheduled until December an extraordinary meeting has now been called for Monday night, (October 19).

There is only one substantial item on the agenda – a notice of motion to be moved by Conservative council leader Cllr Karen Grinsell and jointly seconded by Liberal Democrat group leader Cllr Ade Adeyemo and Green group leader Cllr Max McLoughlin.

The motion reads: "On October 14, ITV news reported on the behaviour of some Solihull Councillors which, in our opinion encourage hatred and discrimination to such an extent these councillors are not fit to represent Solihull Council in civic roles and through other appointments.

"Council notes the deputy mayor and other appointments were made at annual council but due to events, these appointments need to be reconsidered."

Among the resolutions to be debated are:

  • Appoint a new deputy mayor
  • Ask the stronger communities and neighbourhood services scrutiny board to reconsider the role of chairman previously held by Mr Feeney
  • Ask the resources and delivering value scrutiny board to reconsider the role of vice chairman which had been held by former councillor Mr Campbell
  • Replacing outside bodies appointments including on the West Midlands Combined Authority overview and scrutiny committee which had been held by Mr Campbell, and Mr Feeney as an observer to the West Midlands Airport shareholders committee

The motion has the support of 36 members of the council including all Conservative, Liberal Democrat and Green councillors.

Independent cllr Elenora Gough, who quit the Reform UK group last month, is also on the list of those who have backed it.

The 12 Reform UK councillors on the authority including group leader Samantha Gethen have not backed the motion.

Meanwhile the high profile by-elections for the Castle Bromwich vacant seats could be held before the end of next month.

Notices of vacancy for the former councillors have been issued by SMBC which read: "To call an election a request must be made in writing to the returning officer.

"Once received, an election would be held within 35 days after the request has been made."
