Drivers warned of full weekend motorway closures this weekend
By Emily Griffin 10th Aug 2026
Drivers are being warned of a full weekend of motorway closures on sections of the M42 and M6 as HS2 construction work continues across Solihull and North Warwickshire.
National Highways has announced that traffic management will be in place from 9pm on Friday 14 August until 5am on Monday 17 August to allow work to continue on key HS2 structures.
The closures will affect the M42 between junctions 6 and 9 in both directions, including the M6 Junction 4a southbound link road to the M42 in both directions.
Restrictions will also be in place on the M6 northbound Junction 3a link to the M6 Toll at T1 and the M6 Toll southbound from T2.
The closures are needed so workers can safely continue installing beams for the M42 Motorway Box in Solihull and carry out deck installation work on the Water Orton Viaducts, which will carry the new HS2 railway across the motorway in North Warwickshire.
National Highways said a fully signed diversion route will be in place throughout the weekend closure period to help motorists navigate the area.
Residents living nearby may also notice some low-level noise from the construction sites while the work is being carried out.
Drivers are advised to allow extra time for journeys and check traffic conditions before travelling during the closure period.
