Councillors are calling for action to explore whether a public protection order is needed to tackle anti-social behaviour in Solihull town centre.

A motion brought forward by the ruling Conservative group is set to be debated this week which will bring the issue into sharp focus.

Councillor Heather Delaney's motion says : "Concerns continue to be raised by residents, businesses and visitors regarding incidents of anti-social behaviour within the town centre."

It says although the borough is "one of the safest places in the West Midlands" anti-social behaviour can undermine public confidence.

The motion requests Councillor Wazma Qais, the cabinet member for communities, to undertake an assessment whether the statutory tests for the introduction of a Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) are met.

Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council implemented its first PSPO last summer in Chelmsley Wood in response to anti-social behaviour there, while a second was implemented earlier this year to tackle illegal street racing near Birmingham Airport.

A first breach of an order results in a warning, followed by the issuing of a fixed penalty notice of £100 for further breaches.

Prosecution is considered when non-compliance persists with a maximum penalty of a £2,500 fine.

The motion says if evidence supports action, a proposal to introduce a PSPO would go out to consultation with Solihull residents, businesses and West Midlands Police to gather their views.

This would then guide the scope, enforcement and operation of a PSPO, before it would be drafted and any final decision is made.

The motion is also calling for the authority to write to acting chief constable of West Midlands Police Scott Green and West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner Simon Foster requesting additional policing resources be allocated to Solihull Town Centre.

The motion is set to go before Solihull Council's next full council meeting.

The meeting, which is open to the public, takes place at the Civic Suite from 5.30pm.
